Gastronomy at Fortress Hohenwerfen Castle
In 1525, miners and peasants from Bad Gastein and the Pongau region marched to Salzburg to overthrow the then prince archbishop. On the way there, the rebels also occupied Fortress Hohenwerfen.
Now, 500 years later, the Pongau region and Fortress Hohenwerfen Castle are to become a symbolic forum for the local population once again and the castle is to be "stormed" and occupied once more.
What will happen on June 21, 2025?
The Prince Archbishop of Salzburg invites guests to the castle that evening. In addition to the invited guests, loyal followers and privileged guests, the uninvited guests gather in front of the castle gate, who will gain admission that evening to take a seat at the table that is not intended for them. The expulsion of the prince that evening represents the few months that the peasants and miners held Fortress Hohenwerfen Castle as a pledge and symbol of a victorious battle.
In the thick of it instead of just being there...
Whether at the prince's table or as part of the crowd that will take possession of the castle that evening, all those present will be confronted with 500 years of castle history, Pongau regional history and social debate about human rights and freedom in a spectacle.
The taking of the castle builds a bridge to the present. Not romanticized in historical garb, but in their present-day working clothes, the rebels come from the stables, tunnels and factory to take the castle and make their demands heard.
